While doing our scavenger hunt on a gloomy day on Mineral Spring Avenue, we noticed first how busy and hectic the surroundings were at North Providence High School. Mineral Spring Avenue was heavy with traffic, and cars were entering and exit the school parking lot at a rapid pace. The school’s football field is set back behind the building and is locked with a deadbolt and a fence. The back entrance to the parking lot overlooks Fatima Hospital and the neighborhood behind the school seems to be more quiet than the front entryway. We didn’t see any students walking around - maybe because it was a rainy day. We thought the school looked very institution-like; we couldn’t really see in any windows and there weren’t any colorful signs or banners promoting school pride. In preparing to teach in the school, we would want to learn more about the teachers at North Providence High School. Dr. Horwitz mentioned that NPHS is home to some of the best teachers in Rhode Island. What makes these teachers “the best”? How difficult is it to gain employment at NPHS? We knew that NPHS was on Mineral Spring Avenue, but we learned quickly how dangerous it is to be a pedestrian in front of NPHS when we almost got hit by a car taking a picture. We wonder - do kids walk to school? Is this safe? While thinking about our teaching practices, we think this scavenger has taught us that exploring the feel of the community around the school would be important before starting a teaching job somewhere. This really gave us a good idea of how students’ days start and end and how they feel when entering the school parking lot.
